Spiritual Medicine Buddha -The Buddha of Healing
Spiritual Medicine Buddha
According to Wikipedia, Bhaisjyaguru is the name of the Medicine Buddha. The name means, “Medicine Master and King of Lapis Lazuli Light.” He is the Buddha of healing. He is associated with healing the illnesses and sufferings of all human beings.
Pictures and statues of the Medicine Buddha display him as having a deep lapis lazuli colored body, which signifies, “wisdom and compassion” ( Lapis Lazuli is a semi-precious stone, which is believed to possess curative powers). Moreover, he is dressed in a monk’s robe, and seated in a cross legged, or lotus posture on a petaled lotus. On his left hand, he holds a begging bowl filled with healing nectar, while his right hand rests upon his knee with palm facing outward, granting blessings, and holding a flower, or "stem of a myrobalan plant."

A group called The World Wide Healing Circle believes that meditation and/or prayer to the Medicine Buddha can produce a healing effect. They recommend that individuals wishing healing for themselves or others should find a quiet and comfortable place. Take a few deep breaths, and attempt to empty the mind. Next, imagine the image of the Buddha sitting on top of your head. Ask him to bless you with his healing power. Then, imagine a bright light emanating from his heart chakras covering your entire body dispelling all illnesses and suffering. Allow the light to spread to those you know who are suffering from emotional or physical illness. Furthermore, imagine the light covering the entire Earth bring healing, love and peace to all.
Besides, the group believes that by reciting the Medicine Buddha mantra or simply repeating his name an individual can overcome mental or physical afflictions.
In Wikipedia, it states that the "Medicine Buddha mantra is held to be extremely powerful for healing of physical illnesses and purification of negative karma." One form of practice, when one is stricken by disease, is for the patient, "to recite the long Medicine Buddha mantra 108 times over a glass of water. The water is now believed to be blessed by the power of the mantra and the blessing of the Medicine Buddha himself, and the patient is to drink the water. This practice is then repeated each day until the illness is cured."
Short Medicine Buddha Mantra:
Tayata
Om Bekandze Bekandze
Maha Bekandze
Radza Samudgate Soha
May the many sentient beings
who are sick,
quickly be freed from sickness.
And may all the sicknesses of beings
never arise again.

It is extremely important to meditate, pray, and/or recite the mantra with much faith, love and compassion.
I hope that my painting of the Spiritual Medicine Buddha brings you health and inner peace.
