Spiritual Medicine Buddha -The Lapis Lazuli Healing Buddha

Spiritual Medicine Buddha

Bhaisjyaguru, commonly known as the Medicine Buddha, is the Buddha of healing and medicine. According to Wikipedia, he is the “Medicine Master and King of Lapis Lazuli Light.” Moreover, he is depicted as a, “doctor who cures suffering using the medicine of his teachings.”

The Medicine Buddha is portrayed as having a deep lapis lazuli colored body. The reason being is that Lapis Lazuli is a semi-precious stone, which is believed to possess curative powers.

Moreover, he is dressed in a monk’s robe, and seated in a cross legged, or lotus posture on a petaled lotus. His left hand holds a begging bowl filled with healing nectar; while his right hand rests on his knee with palm facing outward, granting blessings, and holding a flower, or "stem of a myrobalan plant."

A group called The World Wide Healing Circle believes that meditation and/or prayer to the Medicine Buddha can produce a healing effect. They recommend that individuals wishing healing for themselves or others should find a quiet and comfortable place. Try to empty the mind while taking a few deep breaths. Imagine the image of the Medicine Buddha sitting on top of your head with a bright light emanating from his heart chakras. Ask him to bless you with his healing power while imagining the light covering your entire body dispelling all illnesses and suffering.

Additionally, you can imagine the light spreading to those you know who are suffering from emotional or physical illness and/or covering the entire Earth bringing healing, love and peace to all.

Furthermore, the group believes that by reciting the Medicine Buddha mantra or simply repeating his name an individual can overcome mental or physical afflictions.

Wikipedia states that the "Medicine Buddha mantra is held to be extremely powerful for healing of physical illnesses and purification of negative karma." One form of practice, when one is stricken by disease, is for the patient, "to recite the long Medicine Buddha mantra 108 times over a glass of water. At the end, the water is believed to be blessed by the power of the mantra and the blessing of the Medicine Buddha himself, and the patient is to drink the water. This practice is then repeated each day until the illness is cured."

Buddhist Prayer For Peace

May all beings everywhere plagued with sufferings of body and mind quickly be freed from their illnesses.

May those frightened cease to be afraid, and may those bound be free.

May the powerless find power, and may people think of befriending one another.

May those who find themselves in trackless, fearful wilderness-the children, the aged, the unprotected- be guarded by beneficial celestials, and may they swiftly attain a Buddhahood.

May peace be with you.
